Reinforced concrete column pre-sizing FREE
Work out the section of a reinforced concrete column from its tributary area and floors. Below the result you find the formula and the standard.
Formula, example and standard
N = A · n · q → A_pil = N / (0.5·fcd)
Example with the starting values (Tributary area: 20 m²; Floors above: 2; Total load q: 10 kN/m²): Min section 30×30 cm. Load N ≈ 400 kN · theoretical area 565 cm².
- The minimum section is always 30×30 cm, even for light loads.
- Rule-of-thumb formula: it ignores the seismic moment and combined bending.
- In seismic zones real sections are much bigger: always get a structural check.
